The Don's Daughter He Left to Bleed novel · Chapter 5 of 24

Chapter 5: Frozen

The safehouse in Carroll Gardens had one good chair, and I sat in it with my mother's rosary wound around my fist.

My father stood by the window.

He had listened to the whole story, and then he had said one sentence.

"Whatever you need, it's yours."

"I don't want it," I said.

He turned around.

"The money," I said. "The men. The house. I left because I didn't want to be your daughter, Papa, and I'm not going to come back and be rescued."

"You were shot."

"I know I was shot."

"They froze your accounts."

"Then I'll make a new one." My voice cracked, and I made it steady. "Gabriel took my name off the wedding, off the network, off the lease. He did it by Monday. I want to take it back in the same room where he took it. On his own turf. Not in a warehouse."

My father looked at me for a long time.

Franco cleared his throat from the couch.

"She's you," he said. "She is exactly you."

"She's her mother," my father said, very quietly.

Nobody spoke.

Then he crossed the room and put one heavy hand on top of my head.

"Do it your way," he said. "But I'm putting a man on you."

"I don't need a man."

"You already have two," Giacomo said.

I turned.

He was leaning on the doorframe with his arms crossed, still in the grey orderly jacket, and he did not look sorry.

"Two what?" I said.

"Two of my men. On you. Every day since you left."

I stared at him.

"Seven years," he said. "One was on your building. One was on your commute. When you moved, they moved."

"You had me watched."
