Chapter 6: Her Cup

Nobody told me how many people sat down to breakfast at a Quintero table.

Twenty-two, and every one of them watched me not eat.

I'd found the note at dawn and read it twice.

Then I'd put it in my bra and gone downstairs in yesterday's dress, and now I sat with my hands in my lap, and the silver coffee pot was coming down the table.

Giulia sat on my left in a borrowed sweater, color back in her cheeks, with a plate of eggs she was happily destroying.

"You're not hungry?" she asked.

"I'm saving room."

"For what?"

"Later."

Ines sat across from us with a stack of patient charts and a cup of tea, and the look she gave me was very quiet.

Ramiro had the seat on my right.

He was telling a story about the night his car got stuck on a ferry, and Giulia was laughing.

I liked him.

I had to remind myself I was only liking him on the strength of one lunch.

A girl in a grey apron set a white cup in front of me and poured.

Black, the way I take it.

I looked at it and thought, nobody has asked me how I take my coffee in this house.

Tadeo came in then.

He wore a fresh white shirt and he didn't look at me.

It was the way he didn't look that told me everything.

His eyes went round the room once, over the pot, the girl, the cups.

Then he crossed to my chair, picked up my cup, and said, "Mine's gone cold."

"Tadeo, I haven't touched it," I said.
