Chapter 19: The Account

I didn't answer it.

I ran to the foot of the back stairs with it buzzing in my hand.

"Marcello."

He was already coming down, in a T-shirt and bare feet, one hand on the rail.

He saw the number and stopped.

"Third ring," I said. "Fourth."

"If I answer, she knows."

"If you don't, what happens?"

He didn't have to think about it.

"They call her instead."

The phone kept shaking.

Fifth ring.

I took my own phone out, opened the recorder and pressed the red button.

I held it out next to his.

He took his old phone from me and looked at it for one more second.

Then he swiped it open and put it on speaker.

"Brancato," he said.

His voice came out low and clear.

It was the first time in two years he'd said his own name to anyone outside this kitchen.

A woman's voice answered, polite and careful, with a soft island accent.

She gave the name of the bank and her own name.

"I'm calling for Mr. Marcello Brancato, the account holder."

"Speaking."

"Mr. Brancato, I'm sorry to trouble you. We've received an instruction from your authorized agent this morning. A transfer of the full balance to an outside account. For a transfer of this size, we're required to confirm with the holder directly."
