Chapter 22: Dark House
I didn't move.
Footsteps crossed the foyer.
Two men, maybe three, on a floor that creaks in eleven places.
I knew every one of those places.
I took my phone out under my coat and turned the screen all the way down.
I texted the driver in the garage.
POWER CUT. MEN INSIDE. GET THE OLD MAN WITH THE CANE. NOT THE POLICE.
Three dots.
GOING.
Then I stood up and walked to the front of the chapel.
I put my hands on the casket lid and lowered it over the Don's face.
You close the lid when strangers come into the dark.
A flashlight beam swept the foyer behind me.
I slipped out the side door of the chapel before it reached the pews.
I walked the side hall with one hand on the wall, counting doors.
The second chapel.
The washroom.
The showroom, where the second mahogany casket stood with its lid up and nobody in it.
Then the back hall.
From the alley end came a crash, and a man's voice swearing.
Then the embalmer's voice, very calm.
"Wrong door, son."
Something heavy hit the floor.
Then a second voice.
