Chapter 14: In the Gray Car

Raf's POV

While Elena's plane was still over Ohio, I sat in a kitchen in Newark with the oldest man on the Commission.

He had his cane across his knees and a plate of cold sausage he had not touched.

I put the recorder on the oilcloth and pressed the button.

Pietro Rinaldi's voice filled the room.

The old man listened to all of it with his eyes shut.

When it ended, he opened them.

"That is Pietro," he said.

"Yes."

"I would know that voice in my grave." He tapped the cane once. "And in front of the table, Montano, it is a dead man's voice on a tape that came out of a Montano house."

"Elena said you would say that."

"She is her father's daughter." He almost smiled. "Bring me Alessandro's own mouth. Bring it in front of his captains, and I will bring the other four."

"When?"

"His father's memorial dinner is Saturday. All his men will be at the table."

That was what I had wanted from him, and I took it.

I made three more calls from the car.

I did not ask any Pagano captain to love me. I asked each one what Sandro had paid him last year, and what he had paid the cousin who was never on the books.

Two of them hung up.

The third said, very quietly, "Which night do you need me to be sick?"

By evening I was in Chicago, parked in a gray rental across from Elena's building, with my driver asleep in the back and a small receiver in my lap.

I had told Elena I would not be her guard.

I had lied.

I sat in the car all night with my hand on the door handle.

At midnight her message came.

Not yet. Stay.

I stayed.

At nine in the morning, the receiver woke with her voice.

"Good morning, Sandro."

"Sit. Eat."

The sounds of a long breakfast came through, forks and cups and a newspaper turning.
