Chapter 11: The Sit-Down

Ezio closed the door in their faces.

He stood with his forehead against it for a second.

Then he turned around.

"Stay here," he said. "Order breakfast. Don't open the door for anybody but me."

"I'm coming."

"No."

"They're voting on me."

"They're voting on me." He was already buttoning his shirt. "A sit-down is the family's men, at the family's table. No wives. No girlfriends. Nobody who's ever said a word to a cop."

"So I'm the only one who isn't allowed in the room where they talk about me."

"Yes."

He bent and kissed me hard, once.

"Stay," he said, and left.

I sat in his bed for about four minutes.

Then I called Fia.

She picked up on the first ring, wide awake.

"Tell me everything."

"Later. How fast can you get to Canal Street?"

"Why?"

"Because I'm going to a sit-down."

There was a short silence.

"Oh, I am absolutely driving you," Fia said.

Gaspare's restaurant sat on Decatur Street with green awnings and white tablecloths.

At noon on a Saturday the front was closed.

Two Severino men stood outside the door.

They saw Fia's dented white hatchback pull up and looked at each other.

Fia got out first, in jeans and red lipstick, with a bakery box under her arm.

"Lunch delivery," she said, and walked straight past them.

They were so stunned they let her.

I walked past them right behind her.

The back room was dark wood and red leather.

Seven capos sat around a long table under a painting of the Bay of Naples.

Ezio sat at one end.

Gaspare sat at the other, with his hands folded like he was about to say grace.

He was in the middle of a sentence.

"...because a rat is a rat, my friends. She ran to the federal building that very night in her little bar apron. She has been a pet of the government for eight years. And now she's in his bed and his house and his business, and her bastards..."
