Chapter 19: Omertà
I stood on the landing and watched him walk down the rest of the stairs.
He didn't look back.
The old man with the walnut face did.
He lifted two fingers to his forehead at me and followed his Don out to the car.
On Monday morning at six, somebody banged on the bakery door below us.
Not a customer knock.
A fist.
Fia went down in her robe with a rolling pin.
She came back up with Ezio's mother.
The Signora was in her black coat with her handbag over her arm, and her face was the color of the flour sacks.
She didn't sit.
"You did this," she said to me.
The twins were still asleep.
I closed their door.
"Did what?"
"He told me last night. At dinner. Over the soup." Her voice shook. "He is going to walk into the federal building this morning and open his mouth. About Gaspare. About the port. About the war. About himself."
"I know."
"You know." She laughed, a terrible sound. "Thirty years I was married to a Severino. Do you know what we do not do? We don't talk. His father would rather have died."
