Chapter 20: The Hospice in Berwyn
"Who?" I said.
Carlotta shook her head.
"Not on the step. Not for free." She wrapped her arms around herself. "He's going to clean up. I'm the mess."
"I tell you a name, you keep me alive, and when this is over you put me on a train with a suitcase. That's the deal."
Behind me Teo had come down the stairs.
"She sleeps at my house in Oak Park," he said. "Ten men. Nobody gets through the gate."
Carlotta laughed, high and cracked.
"In my husband's house."
"In the guesthouse," Teo said.
She looked at me.
"Deal," I said. "Now say it."
She said it.
"His driver. The old one. He drove Uncle for thirty years, and quit the winter I was fourteen. Uncle still pays for everything he has."
She swallowed.
"He's dying. A hospice in Berwyn. Uncle sends him white roses every Sunday."
Teo's men drove her to Oak Park in somebody's borrowed coat.
The next evening Teo drove us to Berwyn, me and Benedetta, with the twins at home with the old baker and seven men.
