Chapter 15: The Dock
Tomo's POV
I told Zuza to stay in bed, and she was already pulling on her boots.
"The office," she said. "If it's the dock, I want the keys to the office and my father on the phone. You go first."
She kissed me once at the door, hard, and I took the stairs three at a time.
The Bartos dock was white with new snow, and every tow lay quiet at her mooring.
Four deckhands stood in a line across the gangway with boat hooks held low.
The head deckhand stood in the middle. His right hand was in his coat pocket, around two bolts.
Dominic Pellegrino stood at the foot of the gangway in a camel coat, unshaven, with two men behind him.
I had never seen him unshaven. I had never seen him without a smile.
"Vukovic," he said. "You came for the lady."
"I came for the dock," I said.
I stopped between him and the deckhands, with my hands open at my sides.
