Chapter 22: The Third Pew
Santino came out of the third pew and walked up the center aisle.
He didn't go to the lectern.
Livia was still bent over it.
He stopped at the foot of the altar steps, below her, and turned around to face the church.
Four hundred people looked at him.
His family. His captains' wives. His monsignor. The newspaper.
I stood beside the lectern where I was.
I didn't sit down, and I didn't go to him.
"My name is Santino Corsi," he said.
As if anyone in that church didn't know it.
"Three years ago this woman's mother needed a heart. Her insurance ran out. I knew it, because her mother sewed for my family."
He was looking at the pews, not at me.
"I offered to pay for the clinic if her daughter married me. I made it a deal. I wrote conditions. She quit her work. She carried a phone my people could read. She didn't go anywhere without my driver."
A murmur went through the aunts.
Nonna sat perfectly still in the second pew.
"I told myself it was protection," Santino said. "It was ownership. I bought a wife with her mother's heart, and I let everyone in this city call it a love match."
