Chapter 24: What Counts
I didn't take the envelope.
I looked at it in his hand, and then at the stripped bed behind me.
"No," I said.
"Mira, it's not for you. It's for the clinic. For families."
"Then give it to the clinic. Not in her name."
His hand stayed out.
"She sewed for my family for twenty years. I owe her something."
"You owed her one signature." My voice came out steady, and I was glad. "You don't get to put her name on a brass plate by a bed and walk past it at the next gala and feel better."
Marisa made a small sound beside me that might have been a cheer.
"And the account?"
"I'll pay it. Two hundred a month. It's my mother's bill. I'm her daughter."
Santino lowered the envelope slowly.
"Then tell me what counts," he said. "Tell me, and I'll do it."
"Nothing you do for me counts. Not anymore. That's finished." I picked up my coat from the chair against the wall. "If you want something to count, do better by somebody else. Somebody who never sees your name on it. Somebody I never hear about."
He stood in the doorway of room 214 for a long moment.
