Chapter 30: The Banns
Marisa's mother was sitting on Mama's stoop in her church coat with a three-ring binder on her knees.
It was white.
It was three inches thick.
On the spine, in black marker, it said WEDDING.
"Where have you been?" she said as we came up the walk.
"At the cemetery, Ma. Setting the stone."
She stood up and crossed herself in the direction of Archer Avenue.
"God rest her. Now sit down. We have a problem with September."
"We haven't picked a date," I said.
"I picked a date." She opened the binder. "The second Saturday. Saint Bridget's is free at eleven. The hall is free after. I already put down the deposit."
Nathaniel looked at me.
"How did she put down a deposit? We got engaged on Sunday."
"I've had this binder since Mira was nineteen," Marisa's mother said. "I just had to change the name of the groom."
"There was a groom when she was nineteen?"
"There was a boy who sold her a bicycle. I had hopes."
Marisa sat down on the stoop and put her head in her hands.
"Ma. You can't run their whole wedding."
"Who else is going to run it? Him?" She pointed at Nathaniel. "He wanted a taco truck. I heard him say it at the sign party."
"Tacos are very good," Nathaniel said.
