Chapter 14: Leave Him

On Sunday morning they moved Emilio out of intensive care, and I went to the hospital chapel to be alone for five minutes.

It was a small room on the ground floor with six pews and a plastic Mary.

Remo had walked me as far as the door.

Two men in dark coats were standing outside it when I turned around, and they were not Remo.

They were Ignazio's, and they had Remo penned against the wall with a polite hand on each arm.

"It's all right, Mrs. Falzone," one of them said. "The old man just wants a word."

Ignazio sat in the front pew with his hat on his knee.

He did not get up.

"Sit, cara."

I sat two pews behind him.

"I'll say it plainly," he said, without turning. "You're a clever girl, and you've had a hard week. I don't like to see it."

"Then why are you here?"

"Because you have a choice, and nobody has told you that."

He turned around then, and his face was kind.

"Leave Tancredi," Ignazio said. "Walk out of that house today. Come to mine, and bring the boy when he can be moved. He'll have the best doctors, and a bed with no chain on it."

"And Tancredi?"

"Tancredi will sign the chair over to me at Orsola's dinner, in front of everyone, with you sitting on my right. That's all I need. A Falzone wife at my table, and the thing is settled with no more blood."

I looked at the plastic Mary.

"And if I say no?"

"Then the yard is a big place, cara." He said it as gently as he had said everything else. "There are a great many yards."

I could hear Remo in the corridor, swearing at the men who held him.

"You have until the dinner," Ignazio said. "And you tell no one. If Tancredi hears of this, the boy hears about it from a different knife."
