Chapter 6: The Long Table

By Wednesday night my husband and I had not said a word about the study, or about the text on his phone.

Friday stood.

Emilio's sentencing was in two days, and I had read Ignazio's message so many times I could see it with my eyes shut.

He had set the lamp back upright on his desk, and he had had the rug cleaned.

He found me in the upstairs hall an hour before the captains' supper, in a green dress with my bandage still on.

"Is it still Friday?" I said.

"Sit at my right tonight," Tancredi said.

"You're telling me where to sit."

"I'm telling you where I'd like you."

I looked at his mouth.

He looked at my hand.

"I'll sit where I want," I said.

"Then I hope that's my right."

I was down at the table first, and I took the chair next to his.

Nobody had sat in it since his mother died.

The Falzone captains came in with their wives, thirty of them, loud, in good suits, and every one of them stopped at the doorway when they saw me there.

I had paid half those wives' rent through the household account, and not one of them looked at me.

Ignazio came in last, with Orsola on his arm.

He kissed my forehead as he passed my chair and said nothing about where I was sitting.

Orsola took the chair across from mine, in red, with her hair down.
