Chapter 15: Three Black Cars
"Was anybody hurt?" I asked the foreman.
"Two drivers. One's bad." He paused. "The big one with the mustache. Used to dance with you at weddings."
I knew who he meant.
He was the one who'd lifted me off my feet at my own wedding and spun me until my veil came loose.
"Where?"
"Trinitas, in Elizabeth."
I was dressed in four minutes.
Gianni was dressed in three and had the Buick warming at the curb.
My mother came down in her robe and pushed a paper bag through the car window.
"Sfogliatelle," she said. "For the wives. Hospital coffee is a sin."
The waiting room on the fourth floor was full of Sabatini people.
Soldiers in tracksuits, wives with their coats over their nightgowns, a little girl asleep across two chairs.
When I walked in, the room went quiet.
Then the driver's wife saw me and stood up.
She was a heavy woman in a pink fleece, and her eyes were raw.
I thought she might slap me.
She came across the room and hugged me so hard my back cracked.
"You came," she said into my shoulder. "Nobody from the house came. You came."
"How is he?"
"They broke his arm in two places. And his jaw." She let go and wiped her face with her sleeve. "He held onto the wheel. The stupid man held onto the wheel."
I opened my mother's bag and held it out.
She took a pastry and laughed with her mouth full, and cried at the same time.
The other driver was younger, with stitches over one eye.
He was sitting up in a curtained bay with an ice pack, and he tried to stand when I came in.
"Sit down," I said.
"Mrs. Sabatini." He looked at the curtain, then at me. "They knew which trailer. They didn't even look at the others. They went right to ours."
