Chapter 28: The Hotel Bar
The guard walked Renzo to the steel door.
He looked back once before it closed.
I sat in the oatmeal room with my cold hands on the table until a different guard told me I had to leave.
I took my father's cross out of the plastic tray and put it back on with fingers that wouldn't work.
Gianni had the car door open before I reached the curb.
He took one look at me.
"Tell me in the car," he said.
I told him in the car.
He listened all the way down Second Avenue without interrupting.
At a red light he finally spoke.
"Your handwriting," he said.
"Four years of it."
"So is the signature on the pier transfer."
I turned my head.
"And the card on the roses," he said. "I've still got it in my wallet."
The light went green.
He didn't move the car.
The cab behind us leaned on its horn.
"She doesn't write in your hand by accident, Talia," he said. "She practiced it in the back of my car. I watched her do it for a week."
I looked at him for a long moment.
Then I took out the card the agent had left on Renzo's tablecloth.
"Drive to Todt Hill," I said. "I need something from his mother."
Renzo's mother was in her garden, deadheading the roses in a straw hat.
