Chapter 5: Terms of Return

I stood up so fast my knees cracked.

He didn't stop me. He tucked himself back into his trousers, zipped them and stayed sitting, with his hands on his knees where I could see them.

I reached behind my head and pulled the mask off.

There was no point in wearing it. The man had known for a week.

"How long?" I said.

"Since last Friday, when you told me your secretary quit."

"You knew the whole time."

"Yes."

"Then why did you..." My voice cracked. I made it sharp. "You let me stand there. You let me dance for you."

"You wanted to."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one that's true." He kept his voice level. "You looked more alive in that room than I've seen you in five years. I wasn't going to be the one to put a stop to it."

"You're a manipulative bastard."

"Yes."

"You paid fifty thousand dollars to lie to my face."

"I paid fifty thousand dollars because I walked in and saw you," he said, "and I could not make myself leave."

The room went quiet. Down the hall the bass line thudded through the wall.

I picked my robe off the arm of the couch and pulled it on, belted tight.

"I said one time," I said. "You paid for three more. We're finished."

"You said one time and then you put your mouth on me."

I felt my face go hot. "That was before I knew you knew."

"Does it matter?"

"Of course it matters!"

"Why?" He stood. He wasn't loud, but he filled the room. "You've spent five years being furious at me. I've heard every word of it. Not once did you say what you wanted."
