Chapter 14: The Inn
Ysolene didn't ask him that night.
She told herself it was because her father was singing in the common room of the Three Herons.
Half of Lorien's river trade was standing him free ale.
That was not the reason.
It was because she didn't want to see what Valerian's face did when she said the words.
He had taken the best room, at the top of the stair, with a bay window over the water.
The bed was the size of a boat.
The room next door was the baron's.
The wall between was lath and plaster as thin as a sheet.
"Papa will hear everything," she said, shutting the door.
"Your father went to sleep ten minutes ago with his boots on. I've been listening."
"Listening."
"Dragon ears."
"That's cheating."
"It's an advantage." He crossed the room and cupped her face in both hands. "You did it today. Did you notice?"
"I noticed."
"You stood in front of two hundred people and the Crown's judge and gave your father his name."
"You gave it to him."
"I gave him a cell with a bed. You gave him his name."
His thumbs brushed her cheekbones, and she looked into his eyes, grey and soft, and wanted to lie down in them.
