Chapter 20: The Roar

The roof came off Ysolene's bedroom.

Slates and rafters flew away into the dusk, and cold air poured in.

She fell flat on the carpet with her arms over her head.

When she looked up, the sky was full of something huge.

It was longer than the manor house, black-silver in the last of the light.

A spine of curved blades ran down its back, and its wings blotted out the stars.

Its eyes were two lamps, gold and slit.

It opened its jaws and roared again.

Flame rolled out of its throat and set the lawn alight from the lake to the gate.

She got to her knees.

She was not afraid.

That surprised her, as she looked up into that ruin of fire and teeth.

All she felt was the child's warm answering flare in her belly.

She knew him.

Below her, men were shouting.

She crawled to the window, where the bars had been torn out of the stone, and looked down.

The lawn was full of green uniforms.

Fifty archers had broken ranks and were running for the trees.

A man in the King's colours stood on the steps with a drawn sword, bellowing at them to hold.

Beside him in the doorway stood Ignatius in his dressing gown with a cut across his cheek.

"Fire!" Ignatius screamed. "The beast has the Duchess! Fire, you fools, before it kills her!"
