Chapter 24: Every Night
The physician said six weeks, and Ysolene counted every one.
On the forty-third night, Verity went down in her cradle in the nursery with her fist in her mouth.
Fenna took the watch in the rocking chair with a basket of mending and a look that dared anyone to come in.
Ysolene walked down the east stair in her nightgown with a sheet of paper in her hand.
Valerian was in the study, at the desk, with his shirt open and a pen between his fingers.
He had been drawing up the keep's accounts, and she knew he had got no further than the first line.
He looked up, and put down the pen.
"Is she..."
"She's asleep. Fenna's guarding her like a bear."
"Is something wrong?"
"No." She crossed the room and laid the page on the blotter in front of him. "I've written something."
He read it.
It was the old last page, with the old blunt line crossed through. Under it, in her crooked ink-stained hand, she had written:
"Every night, if either asks. More, if either asks. No door, no year, no price. Signed, Ysolene Vaskarys."
He read it twice.
He took up the pen.
His hand, healed, was perfectly steady now.
She watched him write his name beneath hers in the black ink that was blacker than any she owned.
