Chapter 23: The Wedding
The lord's decree came the morning of the wedding, in a black lacquer tube, carried by the steward himself.
He read it aloud at Shizuku's gate with forty neighbors listening.
Danjuro Hanamura was found guilty of fraud, of the drowning of a living woman, and of the attempted destruction of a valley.
He was sentenced to the salt pans of the northern coast for the rest of his life, and his possessions were forfeit to the village.
Beside Shizuku, Chiyo stood with her arms rigid at her sides.
She had asked, the week before, whether she could carry her father a blanket on the road.
Shizuku had said yes.
Chiyo had come back with her face washed and her eyes dry and said, "He didn't look at me," and nothing else.
Now she lifted her chin.
"Thank you, my lord," she said to the steward, in a voice Shizuku did not know. "That will be all."
The steward bowed, and rode away.
Shizuku took her hand.
"Wear the green," she said. "The one with the bamboo."
"Is it good enough?"
"You're my sister," Shizuku said. "I'd have you stand next to me in a sack."
