Chapter 4: The Plainest Daughter

Shizuku wrote the fourth request in the morning, and it said only, "Divorce. Still."

He read it at the table with his tea going cold.

"Denied," he said. "That was shorter."

"I'm saving my ink."

"For what?"

"For tonight," she said.

The teacup stopped halfway to his mouth.

Shizuku felt her face go hot to the ears, but she had said it and she wasn't going to take it back.

She wanted the answer about the east wing, yes.

She crossed her arms over her chest.

"I should tell you something first," she said.

"Tell me."

"I'm not what you're used to. I'm the plainest girl in Kuramizu. My father once offered a cow and four sacks of rice to any man who would marry me, and nobody took it."

His tail went very still.

"My uncle drew the straws," she said, "and I wasn't a surprise. Nobody ever wanted me. Not for a day. So if you're being kind, or you're lonely, or you're just"
