Chapter 14: What the Queen Chooses
Ysmera did not sleep.
By the time the east windows went gray she had decided three things.
She said them aloud to the woman who had waited all night on the stool by the door.
"First, nobody is told."
"Not Fia, not Elowen, not the hold-keepers, and not Torvald until I choose."
"Yes, Majesty."
"If the girls learn it now, Aldous learns it by supper, because children cannot keep a wound closed."
"He believes the princess is yours," Ysmera said. "He believes Fia is a farm brat I stole to spite him."
"Every day he believes it is a day he gives me."
Mirelle nodded, and her face was gray with the night.
"Second, you go back to the nursery."
"You keep your place at the table he bought you, and you carry him whatever tales I give you."
"And you will say her name to me, every day, in the tone you used last night."
Mirelle's eyes stung.
"Which name?"
"Both."
The woman pressed her palm to her mouth.
"Third," Ysmera said. "Fia is mine."
