Chapter 32: The First Run
I went down to the stillhouse the next evening in my old waxed coat, with my plait down my back and no crown at all.
Nobody in the yard called me Your Majesty.
The youngest lass threw me an apron.
"You're on the casks," she said. "Everybody works tonight."
The yard was full.
The crew were there, and half the Guard, and most of the village.
The new malting floor stood where the black walls had been, with fresh slates on its roof and the kiln smoking.
The tall lad had his fiddle again, and hadn't got any better.
Inside, the two copper stills were scrubbed so bright they hurt to look at.
Morag stood between them in a clean cardigan, buttoned right for once, with her sleeves rolled up over the pink scars on her arms.
She was head distiller of the Crown distillery, and she had been insufferable about it for a month.
"Nobody touches anything," she said, to the whole stillhouse. "Not the Queen. Not the Guard. Especially not him."
