The Founders' Banquet was held on the ninety-seventh day, in the great hall of the palace, under three hundred candles.
Every house in the Empire was there.
They sat at long tables laid with white linen and silver, in jewels and ribbons and orders.
The noise of their talk filled the high roof.
Lysandra stood at the foot of the dais in a gown of deep red.
Her hand rested on her husband's arm.
His sleeve was black wool, warm and steady, and she could feel the bones of his wrist under it.
Neither of them had spoken since the carriage.
At table one sat the Prince, with a plate in front of him he did not touch.
Behind the dais, at the edge of the cupbearer's door, stood a tall painted screen.
A pair of boots showed under the bottom of it, if you knew where to look.
She did not look.
On the high chair at the center of the dais sat the Emperor, small and gold and drowsing.
The Saintess's seat was on his right.
Anneliese came in last, in white, with her hair braided in a crown and a halo of soft light on her brow that the Court gasped to see.
She carried nothing.
Her second maid walked a pace behind, holding a velvet cushion.
