Chapter 30: A Chapter With No End
The Prince came to Veyrath house at noon on the hundredth day, alone, in a plain coat, and asked to see the Duke.
Alaric received him in the study.
Emeric did not sit.
He stood in the middle of the carpet with his hat in his hands and a bruised look around the eyes.
"I owe you," he said.
"You owe me nothing."
"I stood in my father's garden and chose to believe a woman I had known three years over a friend I have known twenty." The Prince's jaw tightened. "I'd have hanged your wife, Alaric. I would have sat at table one and passed the sentence, and called it duty."
"You were told what to see."
"I was a fool."
"You were a good man who was lied to," Alaric said. "I have been the other thing. It is not a hard difference to tell."
Emeric stared.
