Chapter 12: The Paper Cone
She went down at the top of the great staircase at ten the next morning, with a tray in her hands.
The tray held the day's foxglove tea, a cup, a sand-glass and a book of numbers.
Bett was two steps behind her, talking about onions.
Rosalind remembered the cup rattling.
She remembered the stairs tilting up.
The gold came back at the edges of the world.
The high thin whine rose in her ears, and she thought quite clearly, I've done this before.
Then the floor was not there.
Something caught her before she hit it.
It was warm and hard, with a heartbeat she could hear going wild.
An arm slid under her knees.
"I have you," said Lysander, in her ear. "I have you. Do not move."
"The tray," she said thickly.
"Bett has the tray."
"You shouldn't..."
"I am carrying my wife up a staircase," said the Duke of Ardmoor. "Do not tell me what I should do."
He was carrying her.
She was a woman of a hundred and forty pounds in a full skirt.
He was a man who had been dying three months ago.
His breath was coming in sharp pulls.
His arms shook.
