Chapter 20: Winter Court
The Hall of the Winter Court held four hundred people and smelled of wet fur and wax.
Rosalind stood at the foot of the long red carpet with her hand on Lysander's arm.
At the far end, under a canopy of white and gold, the King of Calder sat with the Queen beside him.
On the right of the dais, in a cleared half-circle, stood Corbin Ardmoor in his dark grey coat.
He had a kind, grieved look on his face, and his hands folded.
Beside him stood the Ardmoor physician with a leather case, and a thin old man in a scarlet gown who could only be the Royal Physician.
"Lord Corbin has brought grave words," the King said, when the herald had finished. "That the Duke of Ardmoor is a dying man, kept on his feet by poison, and that his wife is the hand that pours it."
The hall murmured.
Corbin bowed his head.
"It grieves me, sire. I have only ever wished my cousin well."
"Then you may speak."
Corbin spoke for ten minutes.
He was good.
He spoke of the Duchess's dowry and of her late hours in the sickroom.
He said the Duke had been a sound man in his mind until the marriage.
