Chapter 16: The Councillor Calls
At noon the Chief Councillor came in with the Head Physician behind him, and the room went cold.
Tae-heon lay propped on three pillows with the cloth tucked under his arm, and his face had gone the color of old paper.
Seo-wan had watched him do it every day for ten days, and it still frightened her.
He coughed once, weakly, into a handkerchief.
"Majesty," said Heo Gyu-jin, and bowed exactly low enough.
"Councillor." The voice was a thread. "Forgive me for not rising."
"There is nothing to forgive."
The Head Physician took the King's wrist without being asked.
He held it for a long time, frowning, and then he looked at the bronze bowl by the bed with its heap of red-stained cloth.
"The pulse is weaker than last week, my lord."
"And the blood?"
"More than ever."
"Then there's no more to be done by medicine," said the Councillor, "and I will not insult His Majesty by pretending there is."
He turned to Seo-wan.
"Physician Gu. You have been very careful in your reports."
