Chapter 22: Kelsey
The moderator hesitated.
Then a volunteer in a Brookside lanyard walked the microphone down to the front row and held it out.
Kelsey took it in both hands.
Todd's smile didn't move, but his knuckles went white on the podium.
"This is a question for Mr. Whitford," Kelsey said.
Her voice wasn't the bright classroom voice anymore.
It was flat and tired.
"On Monday I was charged with theft. Twelve counts. For the motel."
The gym went silent.
"My lawyer says I should take a deal. So I'm going to tell the prosecutor everything."
She looked at Todd.
"I'd rather say it here first."
"Kelsey," Todd said into his microphone. "This isn't the place."
"You told me the card was Kristen's to give," she said.
"You said the treasurer signed off on everything. You said your wife never looks at that fund, she only looks at her little book."
"You told me it was fine. You told me she'd never know."
She turned to the bleachers.
"He brought the form pad to room 114 in his briefcase."
