Chapter 28: Dottie

Beau swallowed the cornbread.

"I filled out the form on Tuesday," he said.

Everyone looked at him.

"Background check came back yesterday. I'm very boring."

"You didn't tell me," I said.

"You're the board president. I didn't want it to look like I was asking."

"So you didn't ask."

"I asked the room parent." He went back to his chili. "She said yes before I finished the sentence."

Gabe sat back in his chair, satisfied.

Dottie had stopped listening.

She had a bigger problem.

"The science fair's in two weeks," she said, "and my data is a disaster."

Her project was the rock tumbler she'd given Gabe at Christmas.

Her question was whether a rock gets lighter while it tumbles.

She'd been weighing six rocks every Sunday on Beau's kitchen scale since January.

She'd written the numbers down on whatever was nearby.

On Saturday she brought me all of it in a grocery bag.

Napkins. The back of a hardware receipt. The inside of a cereal box. One number in purple marker on a paper plate.

"Dad said you'd know what to do," she said. "He said it's like his shoebox."
