Chapter 19: False Labor

"Seren," I said. "Get Mam. Then Ilvar. Then the healer with her sleeves rolled. In that order."

"Is it them? Are they coming?"

"I don't know yet. Go."

She went, barefoot again, the way she'd gone the night of the redroot.

I lay down on my left side and put my hands on my belly.

Three heartbeats.

Quick, off the beat, and stubborn.

All steady.

"Not yet," I told them. "You hear me? It's snowing. Nobody's born in the snow in this family."

That wasn't true. I'd been born in a fire.

Ilvar carried me across the bridge himself, wrapped in two blankets, with the snow coming down sideways off the lake.

He didn't say a word the whole way. His jaw was so tight I could hear his teeth.

"You're squeezing," I said.

"Sorry."

"I didn't say stop."

They put me in my bed in the royal wing, with the three cradles in a row against the wall.

Four healers came. The young woman with her sleeves rolled, and three others in white, including the old one with the beard to his belt.

He took one look at me and reached for his bag.

"Star-draught," he said. "To stop the womb. At once."

"No," I said.

"Princess, at five months..."

"At five months, with three, the womb gets cranky. It practices. Star-draught knocks the mother out for a day, and I need to be awake to know if this is real." I breathed through the next one. "Warm water. Lots of it, to drink. A hot cloth on my back. And somebody count with me."
