Chapter 24: The Standoff

Nobody moved.

The first guard looked at the sword at his chest. Then at the prince holding it, in bloody shirtsleeves.

Then past him, at me, on the bed with three screaming babies.

"Your Highness," he said. His voice wasn't steady. "We have a council warrant."

"I don't care if you have a warrant from the stars."

The bearded healer pushed forward.

"The law is very clear. The trial was not passed before the birth. The children belong to the crown nursery. Section nine..."

"Section nine," said Mam, "can come and take them off my daughter's chest itself. You'll stand there and watch it try."

She picked up the fire iron.

Seren picked up the teapot.

It was empty.

She held it like a club anyway.

The guards looked at each other.

Then, from the stairwell, came a slow tapping. Stone, then stone, then stone.

A cane.

The guards turned round.

Four servants came up the last turn of the north tower stairs, carrying a chair between them on two poles.

In the chair, wrapped in furs to her chin, with snow on her shawl, sat the Queen.

They set her down in the broken doorway.

She looked at the guards.

At the nursery woman with her blankets.

At the bearded healer.

At her grandson with a drawn sword, and at me.

"Put that away, Ilvar," she said. "Nobody's going to need it."

"Your Majesty," said the healer, bowing so low his beard touched the floor. "The Chancellor's orders..."
