Chapter 16: The Third Jar
Mo Chengyan opened the first box at the second watch, when the press above had gone quiet and the lamp was low.
He had not meant to.
He had lain for an hour on the pallet Liang had made up on the far side of the cellar, with the Sword Saint's arm across his chest, listening to him breathe.
Then he had slid out from under the arm an inch at a time, and sat on a crate with his hands between his knees.
He had told himself he would not.
Then he lifted the lid.
The first sheet lay on top, yellowed at the edges.
It had been folded and unfolded so many times that the crease had gone soft.
He did not need a light to read it.
He took one anyway.
Zhiheng lay with his back to the room, where the warm place beside him had been, and his breathing was even.
He did not sound asleep.
Mo told himself it was courtesy.
The sheet was two pages.
On the first, a Prince's alchemist's boy had been found at the door of a cauldron room.
He lay on his side, with his hands curled in front of him.
The boy was twenty-two, or looked it.
The man who found him was nameless, and he knelt on the floor and did not know what to do with his hands.
The boy spoke.
Mo knew the line.
He had known it for twelve years, and he read it now by the lamp, as he read it every year on the same night.
Tell my brother the third jar is still under the plum tree.
