Chapter 19: The Vigil
A vigil on the eve of a renewal was kept alone, with one lamp lit and the door open.
Shen sent the juniors to the dining hall at dusk.
The Cold Pavilion emptied around him, room after room, until the only sounds were the lamp wick and the wind in the ravine.
He lit the lamp.
He stood in the middle of the floor with his hands in his sleeves.
There was nothing in this house he wished to do.
For eleven years he had thought of the Pavilion as the only quiet place on the mountain.
Tonight it was only a quiet place.
The sounds began at the east gate.
A belt buckle was undone.
A brass pen case was set down on the stone.
One set of boots crossed the yard and stopped at the sill, and did not touch it.
"The former Chief Enforcer of the Discipline Hall asks the Sword Hall's leave to enter."
The voice was low and level, and Shen felt it all the way down his back.
"The rule is that no Lord keeps a vigil with a Lord."
"I am not a Lord. I looked."
"Leave granted," Shen said.
Mo came in out of the dusk with his sleeves rolled and his coat over his arm.
The grey cord was on his left wrist.
He looked around the bare room with great attention.
He looked at the swords on their racks, the single shelf of treatises and the bed against the north wall.
It was a plank of pale wood on two trestles, with a folded blanket and no pillow.
"You sleep on a board."
