Chapter 10: Wolfsbane
Brant carried Benedict to the truck himself.
He did it with a face.
"Wolfsbane," said the pack's healer, after one look at the blood on his shirt.
She was an old woman with a gray braid.
"It's in his blood, not on it. He's been drinking it."
"The bags," I said. "He said not to let them..."
She pressed a heavy brown bottle into my hands.
"Moonwort tincture. Three spoonfuls tonight, and someone to keep him warm and awake until it takes. Bagged blood only feeds the poison. Without this he doesn't wake up."
I looked at Benedict.
He was grey and still, and his lips were moving.
Brant drove us to the tower with the heater on and neither of us talking.
When he pulled up in the garage, he kept the engine running.
"I'm not doing this for him," he said.
"I know."
"I'm doing it for you."
"I know that, too."
His hand lifted off the wheel, an inch toward my face, and then he put it back.
"Call me," said Brant Brodie. "If anything."
I got out.
The mark on my wrist flared once, a warm pulse.
Then I was in the elevator and he was gone.
Benedict's bedroom was on the eightieth floor.
It had a bed the size of a small country and a long window that showed the lake, black as a hole.
The bedside table held a single book.
I put him on the bed.
He opened his eyes.
"Don't," he said, hoarse.
"Don't what?"
"Clause three. You're free to leave. Go back to your floor."
"You're bleeding out of your stomach."
"It'll pass."
"The healer says it won't."
"Cassia."
He caught my wrist, weakly, and turned his face away.
"If you stay tonight, I won't be careful. I've been poisoned for two weeks. I want you too much to be careful."
My face went hot.
"You want me."
"Obviously I want you. I wrote a whole clause against it."
I laughed, and it came out wet.
I reached into the pocket of my jeans, where I had folded my copy of the contract that morning out of habit.
I got three spoonfuls of tincture into him first, while he swore at the taste.
Then I smoothed the contract on the bed, found the page, and pulled the pen from his nightstand.
"What are you doing?"
"Clause seven."
I drew a line through it.
I initialed the margin, MH, in my neatest hand.
"You can't strike a clause alone."
"You're the other party. Initial it."
"I'm in no condition to..."
"Benedict."
He took the pen.
His hand shook so badly that the S looked like a seismograph.
