Chapter 14: The Boathouse
Brant lived in a boathouse on the Calumet River, in a loft over a workshop that smelled of cedar and engine oil.
By the fourth night I knew four things about it.
The woodstove ate a log every ninety minutes.
The kettle screamed.
The couch was too short for him, and he slept on it anyway, with his boots hanging off the end.
And he hadn't laid a finger on me in three days.
He had cooked me his mother's chili.
He had shown me her picture on the wall, a freckled woman laughing with her head thrown back.
He'd taught me to play cribbage, badly, and let me win.
He'd fixed the rattling window in my room at midnight, in his socks, without being asked.
I kept waiting for the book's version of him to show up, the golden god of thunder.
Instead I got a man who left the porch light on.
It was a Thursday night, and sleet ticked on the glass.
I was curled under a wool blanket with a mug of tea when the heat started.
It began in my wrist, a familiar ache, and then it was in my spine, my stomach, the soles of my feet.
My tea went cold in my hands, or I did.
"Cas?"
Brant was at the stove with a poker.
He turned around and went very still, and the log in his fire cracked.
"It's the second wave," he said hoarsely. "Isn't it."
"What do you know about second waves?"
"My father's friends talked about them. After. In bars." His eyes had gone fully gold. "It's the heat of the bond. It comes around the fourth or fifth day, if the pair stays close."
