Chapter 24: Sold
Benedict read it standing up, with his reading glasses halfway down his nose.
I hadn't known he had reading glasses.
"Clause one," he said. "The term is indefinite."
"Renewable by either Party every morning."
"Clause two. Either Party may leave at any time, for any reason, and the other will help carry the bags."
"I'm very proud of that one."
"Clause three. The Parties shall keep a toothbrush at each address." He glanced up. "Which addresses?"
"Yours and mine. Mine has a window seat."
"Clause four. Neither Party will purchase the other, at auction or otherwise."
"There's a rider about birthday gifts. Read on."
He read on.
"Clause five. Third Thursday of the month, dinner, with one Alpha, one nurse if available, and a golden retriever with an anxiety disorder."
"That's non-negotiable."
"Clause six. Birdie is invited to every thing and will be paid double."
"She asked for triple. I countered."
His mouth was fighting a smile.
"Clause seven."
He stopped.
"The Parties shall become romantically and physically involved," he read, in a voice that wasn't entirely steady.
"I reversed it."
"You have an ink stain on your thumb."
"I was thorough."
"Clause nineteen."
"All reasons shall be disclosed on request, in writing, with footnotes."
He took off the glasses.

I watched a hundred and thirty-five years and a dead billing coder from Columbus work their way across his face.
