Chapter 14: The Reconciliation
"You look like a woman who's been dumped," Tenny said.
"I'm supposed to look like that tomorrow."
"Then you have a day to practice. Sit."
He had taken over the table by the window in his room at Harbor Pines.
Spread across it were a dead dictaphone, a pair of tweezers, and Tavy.
She held a magnifying lamp with the face of a woman defusing a bomb.
"Your bag," Tenny said.
I handed him my white evening clutch.
He turned it over, thumbed the pearl clasp, and the pearl came off in his fingers with a small click.
Inside it sat a recorder no bigger than a cough drop.
"Eleven hours of battery," he said. "It hears through the pearl, and it never beeps."
"It does look like a pearl," said Tavy.
"It is a pearl. I'm very good."
