Chapter 17: What Tenny Heard
I folded the bus ticket in half and put it in my shoe.
The cash I would decide about later.
Then I went back into Tenny's room.
My brother sat on the bed with a fork in each hand, eating a second slice of lemon cake.
"She's a terrible person," he said, with his mouth full. "Excellent baker."
"You spilled it on the carpet."
"On purpose. For the story." He licked the fork. "Shut the door."
I shut it.
His face changed.
It went from the grinning menace I knew to something older, and he pushed the plate away.
"The nurse who sings flat," he said. "She was on the phone in the corridor yesterday."
"I had the door open an inch."
"Tenny."
"She said the sister comes at four, every day but Sunday."
"She said the brother's sharp, he listens. She said, same as last week."
My stomach dropped.
"Someone pays her for a log," he said. "Fifty dollars a week, I'd guess."
