Chapter 10: Beale Street

The Memphis suite had a balcony over the street, and the whole city glowed under it.

Neon colored the wet air red and gold.

Somewhere below us a trumpet was playing something slow, and a crowd sang along in pieces.

Joanna shut the balcony door behind us and said nothing.

She took my face in both hands, and the look in her eyes was new.

It was not careful, and it was not afraid.

It was the look of a woman who had decided something and was going to see it through.

"Tonight," she said, "I lead."

"Yes, ma'am."

Her mouth curved.

"I said don't call me that."

"You like it."

"I like it a great deal," she said, and kissed me hard.

She walked me backward across the carpet until my knees hit the edge of the bed.

Then she stopped, and she took her time.

She slid the strap of my sundress off my shoulder and kissed the freckles she'd found in Knoxville.

She slid the other strap down and kissed those too.

The dress dropped, and she stepped back and looked at me.

She looked at every part, slowly, in the light from the street.

I felt my face go hot.

"Don't," I said.

"Don't what?"

"Look at me like that. I'm not an exec. I'm not a hundred and twenty pounds."

"Callie."

"I'm just saying."

"I know exactly what you are," she said. "You're the most beautiful thing in this city, and I have been trying to figure out how to say it for two weeks."

She said it in her meeting voice, flat and certain.

I started to laugh, and the laugh broke in the middle.

She pushed me gently down onto the bed and followed me.

Her gray dress was still on, and I could feel the cool silk against my bare skin.

"You're overdressed," I managed.

"I'm aware."

"Fix it."

"No," she said. "Not yet."

She kissed my throat, then my breasts, sucking my nipples hard.

She kissed her way down my belly and spread my thighs wide in the red and gold neon light from the balcony.
