Chapter 19: April Ninth

Leona Tewksbury filed the petition on the first of April, from a payphone in a grocery store, because she no longer trusted her own office.

I learned it from my father in the back room of the Deaf club.

I sat with a paper cup of coffee in my hands and my eyes on the wall clock.

I had slept four hours a night for three weeks.

The old men sat around the long table in their good shirts, and nobody had put out the cards.

The one with the white stubble beard, the man who had mopped Teo's floor for nineteen years, sat at my right hand.

He had come out of the prison two days earlier on a medical release the club had arranged.

Nobody had yet told me his name, and I had not asked, because he had not offered it.

He lifted his hands.

SHE FILED UNDER THE REAL NAME.

THE BOARD HAS ACCEPTED THE PETITION.

APRIL NINTH, TEN IN THE MORNING, ROCHESTER.

I read it twice and put down the cup.

"What does it say about the name?" I asked aloud.

My father read my lips and signed it to the room.

The old man spelled the answer with great care.

T-E-O-D-O-R-O B-R-A-N-C-A-T-O.

NOT SALVATORE.

THE FILING SAYS THE PETITIONER HAS SERVED NINETEEN YEARS UNDER THE NAME OF HIS DEAD BROTHER.
