Chapter 17: Day Forty-Five
At seven on Thursday morning, the weight room held eighty players and the smell of old rubber.
They stood between the squat racks in rows, in team sweatshirts, with their arms crossed.
The whiteboard on the far wall still said DAY 45 in thick block letters.
Coach Kestner stood under it with a clipboard.
Elliot walked in through the side door, and the whole room turned to look at him.
Tanner came in behind him and stopped at the end of the back row.
He was supposed to be barred from the building, but no one in the room said so.
"Erickson," Coach said. "Come up here."
Elliot walked the length of the room.
His shoes squeaked on the rubber floor, and he made himself keep his shoulders loose.
Coach held out the clipboard.
On it was a one-page form with a blank line at the bottom and a pen clipped to the top.
