Chapter 19: The Athletic Director
The athletic director's outer office had a leather couch, a dead plant, and a clock that ticked too loudly.
Elliot sat on the couch at five minutes to seven with the brown folder on his knees.
Tanner sat beside him, and Shane sat on the arm of the couch with his hood down.
Rory leaned in the doorway with his arms crossed.
The old defensive coordinator stood by the window in a gray windbreaker.
He had been waiting on the front steps when they arrived, and he had said only one thing.
"I should have said it two years ago."
At seven, the athletic director came in.
She was a woman in her fifties, in a dark suit, with a travel mug and a phone already at her ear.
She stopped when she saw the five of them.
"I have a nine o'clock," she said. "What's this?"
"It's about the Marlow game," Elliot said. "Two years ago. I need ten minutes."
She looked at the folder, then at Tanner's sling, then at the defensive coordinator.
"Come in," she said.
