We were dressed and down the hill in the flatbed before the Tahoe reached the yard.
Emmett drove.
He held my hand on the seat between us with his rough fingers wound through mine, and he did not let go until he had to shift gears.
Dutch and Nels rode in the bed behind us, standing, with their hands on the roof of the cab.
Nobody said a word.
I looked at the black Tahoe growing in the windshield, and my stomach turned over.
I had not told them yet.
I had meant to tell them at sunrise, and the sun had not even cleared the ridge.
The Tahoe parked beside the porch, and the grader rumbled on down the lane toward the next place, and a man got out.
He was thirty-nine or so, and tall, with straight sandy hair and a clean quilted vest.
