Chapter 18: The Sale Ring
The bleachers of the Big Timber sale barn went up twenty rows on three sides of the ring, and every board of them was packed.
I stood in the doorway with three men at my back and smelled hay, cattle, coffee and sawdust.
Down in the sawdust, a bored calf was being driven out the far gate.
The auctioneer, a heavy man in a white hat, stood in his box above the ring with a microphone.
Brock Ellingson stood in the middle of the sawdust in a clean quilted vest.
He had the microphone in his hand and a screen on a stand behind him.
The screen showed a picture of a lake, with forty-two cabins around it.
"Ladies and gentlemen," he said, "the Sage Creek Lodge will bring four hundred jobs to Sweet Grass County."
Nobody clapped.
I walked down the aisle between the bleachers.
The talk stopped as I passed, row by row, until the whole barn had gone quiet.
The old woman from the porch sat in the third row with nine neighbors around her, all holding their envelopes in their laps.
She nodded once.
I came to the rail of the ring, and Brock turned, and his smile spread wide.
"Ms. Teigen," he said, warmly.
