Chapter 18: The Cairn Stands

They ran.

The snow had stopped, and the orchard lay blue and white under a low sun, with every bare peach branch cased in ice.

At the far end, where the biggest tree stood, black and white robes were moving.

Twelve exorcists held iron bars.

A ladder leaned against the trunk.

A pot of pitch steamed on a tripod, and the smell of it came across the rows.

They had already taken the top three stones from the cairn.

The stones lay scattered in the snow, and the sight went through Yanzhi.

"Stop!"

He did not know which of them shouted it.

Jingmo did not slow.

He went through the line of exorcists.

He took the iron bar out of a man's hands and dropped it behind him, and then he climbed the cairn.

He stood on top of Yanzhi's mother's grave.

He stood there in his torn grey robe with his wrapped hands open at his sides.

The mark of Yanzhi's slap was still red on his cheek.

He said, in a voice that carried to the wall:

"You will not."

"Brother Jingmo," said the Warden.

He had come out from behind the tripod, immaculate, with his bell at his belt.

"Step down. The Three Halls have signed a writ."

"I read it."

"Then you know it permits the removal of an unconsecrated grave."
