Chapter 20: The Terrace

The sack smelled of fox-bane smoke, and Yanzhi coughed himself awake into a clean cold light.

He was on his knees on a stone terrace.

His wrists were bound behind him with a rope of black iron links that burned wherever the skin touched.

The red cord at his throat had been cut away.

The bead was gone.

He felt its absence.

The Exorcist Terrace was a wide paved platform on the shoulder of the mountain, ringed with twelve bronze pillars.

The whole drop of the valley fell away at the edge.

The sun hung low and red over the ridge.

It must have been late afternoon.

He had been out for most of the day.

In front of him stood a long black-lacquered table, and the Three Halls sat behind it in their heavy robes.

To their right, on a little carved chair, sat Warden Bian Chengzhi.

A silver basin and a silver needle lay on a cloth in front of him.

"Welcome back, little fox," he said warmly.

"Where is he?"

"Brother Jingmo has been informed." The Warden touched the edge of the basin.

"He was told that you were at the Trial. He had a little trouble believing it, I'm afraid."

"He and the Abbot are still being looked for."

"You said the full moon."

"The moon is full today by the old almanac. I find I was a little loose with my phrasing."
