Chapter 16: Jo
"Yes," I said to the reporter, on the cabin step, in my bare feet. "I was there."
She held the recorder under my chin.
Eero stood behind me in the doorway.
His big hand sat low on my hip, under his own flannel shirt, where the camera could not see it.
"And the Chain is really gone?"
"It's in the lake. A hundred and forty people heard it go in."
"Is anyone forced to join the club?"
"No. The list is free and the front door opens both ways."
His thumb moved on my skin, once, slowly.
I did not let my voice shake.
"Put that in your paper," I said, and shut the door.
By two the next night, I was at my desk at Cook County Dispatch with six screens and a cold coffee.
Jo wheeled her chair over and put her chin on my shoulder.
"I went to the lodge last night," she said. "After you left with door guy."
"And?"
"And I said yes to a bear."
I turned my head.
