The Girl Who Stole My Boyfriend Is About to Marry a Billionaire, So I Stole the Billionaire novel · Chapter 1 of 16

Chapter 1: Room 1714

Valeria catches Jake with heiress Bianca Slattery, sees floating comments, gets dragged out by security, and tells Bianca's billionaire fiancé in the lobby, who answers that he already knows.

I went to the Aurelia Hotel to catch my boyfriend cheating, and the air above his door started talking about me.

It was gold writing, floating a foot over the room number.

[The female lead is such an idiot. The demon billionaire is the most loyal man in the whole book.]

I blinked.

The words stayed.

More slid in underneath.

[Once he marries her he's her devoted servant for life. And she's in there with THIS guy?]

[Here comes the cannon fodder ex. Chapter one scream incoming.]

I pressed my hand flat against the wallpaper.

It was cool and real.

I had not slept properly in two weeks, so I told myself this was that.

Jake had said he was in Boston for a site visit.

He had kissed me goodbye on Wednesday with his gym bag on his shoulder.

Then his location popped up on my phone tonight, because he'd forgotten he shared it with me four years ago.

Hotel Aurelia. Park Avenue.

A place that charged nine hundred dollars a night.

Jake still owed me for his car.

I knocked on 1714.

Nobody answered.

I knocked again, harder.

[She's going to cry. She always cries.]

I did not cry.

The door opened on the chain.

Jake stood there in a white hotel robe with his hair wet.

His face went gray when he saw me.

"Val."

"Boston looks nice," I said.

He tried to close the door.

I put my foot in it.

Behind him, a woman laughed.

She walked into view wearing Jake's blue oxford shirt and nothing else I could see.

Platinum bob. Pale eyes. A diamond on her left hand the size of a grape.

I knew her face.

Everybody in the city knew her face.

Bianca Slattery.

Her father owned Slattery Development, where Jake drew parking garages for a living.

[THE FEMALE LEAD. Look at her. Engaged to a god and she picks a guy who drives a leased Audi.]

The Audi was not leased.

I had paid for it.

"Jake, baby," Bianca said. "Who is this?"

Jake unhooked the chain and stepped into the hall, pulling the door behind him.

"Nobody," he said. "An ex. She doesn't let go."

I stared at him.

"We live together," I said. "Your toothbrush is in my bathroom."

"We broke up months ago, Valeria. I've told you that."

He said it loud.

He said it for the man who had just come out of 1716 with an ice bucket.

The man stopped to watch.

So did the couple waiting for the elevator.

Bianca leaned in the doorway and looked me up and down.

My work blouse. My flats. The claw clip in my hair.

"Oh, this is sad," she said. "Did you follow him here?"

"He shares his location with me."

"That's called stalking, sweetie."

She reached back into the room and came out with a glass of champagne.

She threw it in my face.

It went up my nose and down the front of my blouse.

The couple by the elevator gasped.

One of them lifted a phone.

[LOL. Classic. Now security drags her out and she never recovers.]

Bianca picked up the room phone just inside the door.

"Hi, yes, seventeenth floor. There's a woman harassing us. She won't leave."

I looked at Jake.

He looked at the carpet.

"You said you loved me on Wednesday," I said.

"Go home, Val," he said. "You're embarrassing yourself."

Two security guards came out of the elevator almost at once.

They took one arm each.

"Ma'am, you need to come with us."

"I'm not doing anything."

"Ma'am."

They walked me down the hall with champagne dripping off my chin.

The man with the ice bucket said, "Crazy," to nobody.

In the elevator, the gold writing came with me.

It hovered over the buttons.

[Okay but I need her to see HIM. Please let her see him.]

[Author wouldn't dare. She's a side character.]

The doors opened on the lobby.

It was all white marble and low gold light and a piano nobody was playing.

The guards steered me toward the revolving doors.

A man was walking the other way.

He was tall, in a dark suit with no tie, a phone in his hand he wasn't looking at.

Black hair. Gray eyes. A thin pale scar cutting through his left eyebrow.

Everyone in the lobby moved out of his path without being asked.

The comments exploded.

[HIM.]

[Lucian Graves. The Devil of Park Avenue. He OWNS this hotel.]

[That's the fiancé. Bianca's marrying him in two weeks.]

[He's the one who dies in prison for her. I'm still not over it.]

He stopped.

He looked at the guards, then at me.

At the champagne on my blouse.

"What happened?" he asked.

The taller guard straightened.

"Disturbance on seventeen, Mr. Graves. Guest complaint."

The man's gaze stayed on me.

It was very steady.

I thought about Jake saying "Nobody."

I thought about Bianca's ring.

I pulled my arm out of the guard's hand.

"Mr. Graves," I said. "Your fiancée is in room 1714 with my boyfriend."

The lobby went quiet.

The concierge stopped typing.

The man didn't blink.

"I know," he said.
